Why most small business email fails
Email is the highest-ROI channel — when done right.
Email marketing returns roughly $36 for every $1 spent (DMA 2024 data). It outperforms paid social, organic search, and most paid acquisition channels. AND most small businesses underutilize it badly.
The usual story: signed up for Mailchimp years ago, sent 4 newsletters, got bored, list went cold, deliverability tanked, no one opens the few sends that do go out anymore. Then they conclude "email doesn't work for us." Email works fine. The execution didn't.
The cadence collapse
You commit to monthly newsletters. The first three go out. Month four gets skipped because of a busy week. Then two months. Then six. By the time you send again, the list is cold and unsubscribe rates spike.
Generic mass blasts
Sending the same newsletter to your entire list (new customers, longtime customers, prospects, people who haven't bought in years) means it's relevant to nobody. Open rates drop. Engagement metrics tank. Deliverability follows.
Deliverability silently rotting
You don't configure SPF/DKIM/DMARC. Your domain isn't warmed up. You buy or import old lists. Spam complaints accumulate quietly. Eventually most of your sends land in the Promotions tab or worse — and you never see it because the analytics still show "delivered."
How we do it
Boring consistency wins.
Every month one newsletter goes out, on schedule, no exceptions. Content is built around your real business — what's new this month (services, hours, events), useful seasonal context (hurricane prep in summer, snowbird-focused offers in winter), and one piece of genuinely valuable info your customers want to know. We follow your brand voice and the same editorial standards as our content marketing service.
Lists get segmented (new vs returning, by service interest, by location) so each send is relevant to the recipient. Welcome sequences trigger automatically when someone joins your list. Reactivation campaigns target dormant subscribers before they hit the unsubscribe button.
Deliverability is actively managed: SPF, DKIM, DMARC configured properly; subject-line A/B testing finds what your specific list responds to; engagement-based list pruning quietly removes the disengaged so they don't drag down your sender reputation.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Which platform do you use?
We're platform-agnostic. Mailchimp is most common; Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) is great for cost; ConvertKit and Klaviyo are stronger for e-commerce. We'll recommend based on your list size, e-commerce setup, and any platform you're already paying for. We don't take referral commissions from any of them — recommendations are based on your actual fit.
I have an existing Mailchimp account — can you take it over?
Yes. We'll add ourselves as a user (you keep ownership), audit list health, clean up any disengaged subscribers, fix deliverability config, and start running monthly sends. Existing automations and templates stay until we either improve them or you ask us to.
How much do platform fees add?
Mailchimp Standard runs about $20/mo for under 5,000 subscribers; Brevo is around $9/mo for similar volume. Larger lists scale up. Platform fees are billed directly to you (your account, your data). For most small businesses, total cost (our service + platform) is under $325/mo.
What goes IN the monthly newsletter?
Editorial mix tuned to your business and audience: usually 1 main "value" piece (useful info, seasonal advice, behind-the-scenes), 1 promotional piece (offer, new service, event), and 1 community piece (customer spotlight, local event you're sponsoring, team update). Length: skimmable, mobile-first, not overwhelming. Most newsletters are 300–600 words of body content.
How do you handle list growth?
List growth is a separate function (lead magnets, signup forms, post-purchase opt-ins) — we'll set up the basic signup form and post-purchase opt-in as part of onboarding. For active list growth (lead magnets, paid ads to opt-in pages, partner cross-promotion) we can scope a separate project, or roll it into a Local SEO + Content + Email bundle.
What's "deliverability monitoring"?
We track what percentage of your sends actually reach the inbox vs Spam, Promotions, or quietly bouncing. Tools like GlockApps or simple seed-list testing tell us if a specific subject line or content pattern is hurting placement. We adjust accordingly. Many small businesses have terrible deliverability (under 70% inbox placement) without realizing it because the platform analytics still show "delivered."
Do I get to approve every send?
Yes — every newsletter goes to you as a draft for review/approval before sending. Most clients turn it around in a day or two; some delegate full creative control after the first 2–3 months once they trust the voice. Welcome sequence emails are pre-approved during setup so they fire automatically without per-send approval.
How does GDPR / CAN-SPAM compliance work?
Built in by default: every email has unsubscribe link, sender identification, physical address (yours, in the footer). Opt-in is single-confirmation by default for US-only lists; double opt-in for any EU subscribers. Suppression lists are honored. We'll never send to a purchased list — and would refuse to even if you asked.
What if I have a small list (under 200)?
Email marketing still works for small lists — sometimes better, since smaller lists are usually more engaged. Pricing stays the same ($300/mo) because the work involved (writing, design, deliverability, segmentation) doesn't scale with list size. If your list is under 50, honestly hand-written personal emails will outperform a newsletter; we'll tell you that.
Can you do automated post-purchase or post-service emails?
Yes — these are some of the highest-converting emails. Common automations: thank-you email after purchase, satisfaction survey after service, review request after positive interaction, birthday/anniversary message, win-back after 6 months of inactivity. Setup is a one-time project ($300–$500); they then run forever in the background.
